Your range hood should generally be at least as wide as your cooking surface. For island installations or high-output cooking appliances, a wider hood may be recommended to improve smoke and grease capture.
The final installation clearance should follow the requirements of your cooking appliance and ventilation insert. Many custom projects begin with a clearance of approximately 30"–36", but the final mounting height should always be verified for your specific appliance and insert.
A preliminary hood body height can be estimated by subtracting the cooking surface height and the planned hood clearance from the total ceiling height. If your hood will not go all the way to the ceiling, or if you plan to include crown molding or trim, those details should also be taken into account.
At minimum, we recommend providing your cooktop width, cooktop depth, ceiling height, cooking surface height, and preferred installation type. If available, kitchen photos, cabinet dimensions, or architectural drawings are also very helpful.
A wall-mount hood is installed against a wall, usually between cabinets or as a freestanding focal point. An island hood is suspended from the ceiling above a kitchen island or peninsula and may require a wider capture area depending on the installation.
Yes, ideally. The insert dimensions, airflow, duct size, and mounting requirements can all affect the final hood dimensions. If you have not selected an insert yet, our team can help guide you based on your project needs.
